The Board of Imams Victoria (BOIV) welcomes the announcement made by the Labor Government to invest $3 million to stamp out Islamophobia in Victoria.
The Board of Imams Victoria also welcomes Labor Government’s commitment to strengthen the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001 to make it easier to prosecute any individual who incites hatred or bigotry based on someone’s faith or skin colour.
These changes are part of Labor Government’s commitment to strengthen laws to stop discrimination of all kinds against multicultural and faith communities.
Sadly, we know Islamphobia has been on the rise in recent years and the impacts it has had on the Islamic community is unendurable. We commend the government’s commitment to fund the efforts to tackle Islamphobia. It will go a long way in our campaign to promote peaceful co-existence and social cohesion in multicultural and multi-faith Victoria.
The Board of Imams Victoria also welcomes the proposed Multicultural and Multifaith Law Reform Consultative Committee to ensure the voices of diverse communities such as Muslims are heard and considered in the development of Victorian laws.
These reforms are a step in the right direction to strengthen protections for multicultural and faith communities.
